Spring President's Debate
27th February 2013 Central Hall Westminster, London. 6.30pm - 8.00pm, followed by networking and refreshments

The Value of the Visitor Economy

Different people define tourism and the businesses that work in it in different ways, so looking at the value of the industry and its component parts is not always straightforward. Broadly, we can say that domestic tourism generates £114bn, outbound generates £22bn, and inbound tourism generates £19bn, but the figures arrived at depend on what sectors are included in the mix and what ones are missed out. For example, tourists and visitors actively engage in significant retail spending but the extent to which this activity is taken into account is not always clear. And how much do the retailers value or recognise the tourist’s pound? As destinations look more closely at TBIDs as a way to fund their marketing and development activities, how widely can the net be cast when it comes to asking businesses to contribute?

Our panel will look at the question of the value of the visitor economy, where the value comes from and whether its source is fully understood and appreciated. There will be plenty of opportunity as always for audience members to state their own views and ask the panellists questions, and the conversation will continue during the networking once the formal session has concluded.
