President's Debate:
The Future of British Tourism

Motion: This house believes successive governments have failed the tourism industry and it must now take charge of its own destiny.

This summer the Prime Minister gave a speech stating his enthusiasm for and the importance of the British tourism industry. This autumn he is considering the government tourism strategy, which will form the basis of the level of future support we can expect from Westminster. As we await publication of the strategy and clarification of the balance between local, regional and central tourism structures, this debate offers the industry the perfect opportunity to discuss if the time has come to take charge of its own affairs and stop looking towards the government for support.

Chaired by Lord Thurso MP FTS, Tourism Society President
