Top Speakers Announced For Tourism Society Symposium In Birmingham

Some of the UK’s leading experts on cultural and business tourism are lined up to speak at the annual Tourism Society Symposium taking place in Birmingham on 6 & 7 June 2016. The Symposium will bring together more than 200 leading tourism professionals debating topics around the theme, ‘The Business of Tourism – What are the new drivers for tourism today?”

Confirmed speakers include David Massingham, Co-Artistic Director of International Dance Festival Birmingham 2016, Caroline Norbury MBE, CEO Creative England, Martin Green CEO and Director Hull City of Culture 2017, and Anni Hood, CEO Wellness Business Consultancy.

Day one will showcase Birmingham’s culture, industry and film tourism during a choice of three walking study tours. Projects visited will include the Staffordshire Hoard, the largest collection of Anglo Saxon gold and silver ever found, housed in the Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery, plus the award winning Library of Birmingham, the largest public library in the UK. Birmingham’s Coffin Works a 15 year project to create an interactive museum within the city’s Jewellery Quarter is also on the itinerary. The day closes with a networking supper at Birmingham Council House

Day two will move to The Rep, Birmingham Repertory Theatre for a full programme of leading speakers exploring the Symposium theme with case studies and opportunities for networking.

Topics to be covered include:

  • Attracting visitors through retail
  • Embracing cultural tourism
  • Business tourism
  • New opportunities e.g. volunteering, wellness, new sports
  • News ways to market e.g. gamification

Tourism Society Chairman Hayley Beer-Gamage said: “With new research into how customers choose destinations to be published at the event, a mix of panels, interviews and presentations, the Tourism Symposium promises to be a must attend event for all tourism professionals.

“We are delighted that Marketing Birmingham is hosting the event and providing the wonderful venues of Birmingham Council House and Birmingham Repertory Theatre for delegates as well as showcasing the best of the region with a choice of study tours,” she added.
