One of the first fifteen students to complete the new Postgraduate Certificate in Destination Management, awarded by Leeds Metropolitan University, has already gained a promotion as a result of taking the course. The qualification has been developed to a brief from the Tourism Management Institute (TMI) and is delivered through a partnership of Leeds Metropolitan, Bournemouth and Lancaster Universities, with practitioner support from TMI and The Tourism Society.
The winners of the Shine Awards 2010 were announced on Thursday 21st January highlighting the achievements of outstanding women working in the hospitality, leisure, travel and tourism sector. The event, first held in 2004, was attended by some of the most senior representatives of the British travel and tourism industry. The key note addresses were delivered by past Shine Awards Winner, Sandie Dawe FTS, CEO of VisitBritain and the Rt Hon Margaret Hodge MBE MP, Minister for Culture and Tourism.
The integration of the Tourism Society and the Tourism Management Institute (TMI) officially took place on January 1st. The Tourism Society’s annual dinner was held at the House of Commons on Thursday 22nd October 2009 and included the presentation of the Society’s annual award by Society President Lord Thurso MP FTS to The National Trust accepted by Sue Wilkinson Director of Marketing & Supporter Development. The award was given in recognition to the Trusts’ exceptional contribution to the tourism industry.
Society Chair Alison Cryer FTS, Board member John Humphreys MTS and Society Fellows Prof Robert Maitland FTS and Prof Rob Davidson FTS all took part at the 2nd EIAT Conference at Hotel M, Belgrade on 25-27 September. The other leading UK presenter was Laurence Bresh, Marketing Director of VisitBritain. There were over 220 delegates – mostly tourism and hospitality students from Serbia, Slovenia, Montenegro, Bosnia & Herzegovinia, Russia and Bulgaria, with other delegates coming from a further six countries.
