The Tourism Management Institute (TMI) is delighted to announce the launch on Monday 8th October 2012 of the David Hughes Memorial Award in honour of TMI’s President who died suddenly in December 2011.
Final year students studying towards a degree in Destination Management (on a TMI accredited course) can put forward their industry placement reports for consideration. The Award will be given to the best student report, and the prize consists of:
• One year’s complimentary Associate membership of TMI
• Complimentary one day delegate place at either the TMI Annual Convention or Hot Topic event, with up to £100 to cover travel and subsistence costs
• Invitation to present on their placement experience as part of a workshop at that event
The Award, which will be officially launched at the TMI Annual Convention on Monday 8th October by Dave’s widow Anne, will further strengthen links between Higher Education Institutes and the tourism industry, and introduce students to the Tourism Management Institute, the only professional Institute for those working in Destination Management.
TMI’s Head of Professional Development (CPD), Dr Phil Long stated, “The introduction of the David Hughes Memorial Award for best placement report from a student relating to their experience working in destination management is very welcome. Award holders will benefit by the enhancement that this will provide to their CVs and I am sure that Dave would have been pleased by this, dedicated as he was to professional development in destination management.”
Dave Hughes’s widow Anne added, “I am delighted TMI are dedicating this Award to my husband’s memory. Dave was a massive supporter of bringing new talent into the industry he loved. Throughout his working life he proactively mentored young talent and this is therefore a fitting tribute to him."
