Last night at the Tourism Society Annual Award Dinner sponsored by Stena Line, Michel Roux Jr picked up the prestigious Tourism Society Award for his TV series "Service". The show demonstrated the importance of front of house staff, how good customer service is imperative to the hospitality sector and how the industry can change a young person's life and future - inspiring young people to reconsider the industry for their careers.
Michel is a firm believer in positive thinking and this is how he turned his ‘motley crew’ of recruits into industry stars in just 10 weeks. He found a positive in each recruit and praised them for their good work with a simple message of ‘well done’.
‘As employers the words "well done" are far more powerful than any negatives.’ Explained Roux.
After the show had aired Michel received a sack full of letters from young people inspired to work within our industry. Unfortunately, the BBC has not commissioned another series of the show, however Michel was adamant that as an industry we should take this opportunity to inspire young people. This would elevate our restaurants to not only cooking the best food in the world but also servicing it as well.
Host for the evening and society President Lord Thurso MP stated that if we write to our local MP asking to re-commission the show then there is a chance that the BBC may reconsider.
The Society annual dinner was attended by over 100 industry representatives and the after dinner speech was delivered by Sir Rocco Forte, Chairman of the Rocco Forte Collection.
