The Tourism Society And TMI Unite At WTM 2009

Date:
10 November 2009

Alison Cryer FTS, Chairman, The Tourism Society and Roger Platt, President, The Tourism Management Institute (TMI), joined the VisitEngland Chairman Penelope Viscountess Cobham, on Tuesday at World Travel Market to officially announce the integration of the two organisations.

At the two organisations’ AGMs the decision that the integration should go ahead was unanimous. TMI members will automatically be offered full membership from 01 January 2010 of the Tourism Society as well as of the autonomous TMI section giving them the added benefit of the Tourism Society's infrastructure, journal and events, whilst ensuring a continued destination management focus.

The packed audience heard Cryer and Platt united in what the future will hold for the organisation.

Cryer commented: “The integration is a natural move for both organisations and will greatly increase destination management representation within the Tourism Society with the introduction of the TMI section and bring a valuable CPD programme into the Society. It is anticipated that the integration of the two organisations will also strengthen and increase regional chapters.”

Platt stated: “Integration will bring added strengths to both TMI and the Tourism Society and is a win-win move for members. TMI brings destination management practitioners and recognised expertise in continuing professional development; their members will continue to benefit from TMI’s focus in this area as well as gaining the additional benefits of Tourism Society membership, whilst eligible Tourism Society members will be able to join TMI and access TMI member benefits.”

Dr Alan Fyall FTS Deputy Dean, Research & Enterprise, Bournemouth University, will talk about the experiences of current graduates, what the University does to support them and the content of the TMI qualification, a distance learning qualification awarded by Leeds Metropolitan University and delivered in partnership with Bournemouth University and Lancaster University.

The introduction of Continual Professional Development is one of the many benefits that members of The Tourism Society can enjoy.

The press launch was held on the VisitEngland stand, where the nation’s tourist board were announcing the latest consumer research for holidaying in England in 2010.
