WANT THAT JOB? THEN BAKE A CAKE!

Making an impact at a job interview was one of the topics covered by Jon Reed MTS of learnpurple when talking to students at The Tourism Society's annual careers event, held at the University of Westminster in association with Springboard UK.

Making and taking a cake was one way that some candidates make that all-important first impression, he said.

As well as getting practical tips from Jon on how to sell themselves to employers, students were told 'smile - its attitude and personality that will get you that job'. This was the advice of Sara Edwards, Maybourne Hotel Group's HR Vice President, who said the hotel industry offered plenty of scope for rapid career progression, better pay than people often thought, and above all was good fun.

Visit London's Anna Venturas described the role of a world class destination management organisation, how London is marketed overseas and the opportunities that 2012 will offer to extend a first class welcome to the rest of the world.

Tony Climpson OBE MTS, Tourism Destination Manager for the New Forest, said there were few jobs which offered such variety, opportunities to meet so many different people, and the challenge of striking a balance between visitors, residents and the environment.

Summing up, chairman Robert Maitland FTS, the University's Director of Tourism, echoed Jon's advice to the students to decide what they wanted, have faith, and 'just do it'.
