Professional Development Award (PDA)

Purpose of Award

To provide the opportunity for an individual working within the tourism industry in Wales to develop a project that will progress tourism in Wales. The Award will be made annually to a maximum value of £5000.


Applications will be expected to be innovative and creative. The proposed project must contribute to the professional development of the individual applicant as well as to the corpus of knowledge for the tourism industry in Wales. Proposals can be associated with other academic or business projects but all information relating to the PDA must be made public and will remain in the public domain. The project is expected to have practical application/s for the tourism industry in Wales

Conditions of the PDA

The individual granted the PDA will be mentored throughout the project and quarterly written reports will be required. On completion of the project the applicant will be expected to present the results for the Tourism Society in Wales and a full written report will be required in a format to be agreed by the Committee. The successful applicant will be expected to become a member of the Tourism Society.



          Visit Wales

Tourism is big business in Wales. Tourists spend around £9 million a day whilst in Wales, amounting to around £3.3 billion a year. Visit Wales is the Welsh     Government’s tourism team, within the Department for Economy, Science and Transport. We are responsible for formulating tourism policy, encouraging  investment in, and improving the quality of the visitor experience in Wales. We are also responsible for marketing Wales within the UK and internationally.



     Capital Region Tourism

Capital Region Tourism is one of 4 regional tourism partnerships in Wales and receives resources and responsibilities devolved from Visit Wales (Welsh Government) to support tourism development and marketing. All local authorities in South East Wales along with a corresponding number of elected industry representatives serve on its board of management. CRT is the lead body for tourism in the region and its core role is to devise, update and deliver a regional tourism strategy. Current priorities include the adoption of a Destination Management approach across the region. South East Wales generates around 30% of Wales’ tourism revenue but with a relatively low accommodation base much of that is driven by events and day visits.


World Travel Market

World Travel Market, the leading global event for the travel industry, has opened registration for WTM 2013.

WTM 2013 is poised to be the biggest and best WTM yet with a number of new initiatives across the four day event from Monday 4 – Thursday 7 November. The new-look WTM 2013 will see;

•    The Travel Tech Show at WTM will become its own event within WTM

•    Dedicated luxury event A Taste of ILTM at WTM, in association with fellow Reed Travel Exhibition’s event International Luxury Travel Market taking place on 4 - 5 November, and

•   Business Travel Market (BTM) will co-locate with WTM at ExCeL for 6 - 7 November
